Advanced Biodiesel Transesterification

EN 14214 biodiesel directly from 100% waste vegetable oil, without a biodiesel distillation plant.

Overview

More Performance. Less Equipment. Lower Cost.

Used cooking oil is the most attractive biodiesel feedstock, low cost, widely available and strongly incentivized as a waste-based raw material. But it is also the most demanding: high free fatty acid content and impurities make it difficult to reach EN 14214 quality with conventional technology.

Most conventional plants solve this by adding a downstream biodiesel distillation unit, driving up capital investment, energy consumption, plant footprint and operating costs. Save Tech took a different path: our proprietary reaction technology and process design achieve EN 14214 compliant biodiesel directly from 100% waste vegetable oil, with no biodiesel distillation at all.

How the Process Works

1

Feedstock Pre-Treatment

Used cooking oil is filtered and conditioned: solids, water and impurities are removed to prepare a consistent reaction feed.

2

FFA Conversion

The high free fatty acid content typical for waste oils is converted upstream, the key to processing 100% UCO without quality loss.

3

Advanced Transesterification

Save Tech's optimized reaction technology converts the oil with methanol and catalyst under precisely controlled conditions.

4

Phase Separation

Glycerol is separated as a valuable by-product; the methyl ester phase moves on to purification.

5

Methanol Recovery

Excess methanol is recovered and returned to the process, reducing raw material consumption and operating costs.

6

Purification & Drying

The biodiesel is purified and dried to meet EN 14214, directly, with no distillation step required.

The Raw Material Preparation Unit

Waste vegetable oil arrives with solids, water, phosphorus and a high free fatty acid content that varies from batch to batch. Without a dedicated preparation stage these variations pass straight into the reaction and show up as quality problems in the final product.

Save Tech therefore designs and installs a complete raw material preparation unit upstream of the reaction section. It turns a variable waste stream into a consistent, specified feed and is one of the reasons the plant reaches EN 14214 without biodiesel distillation.

  • Filtration and removal of solids
  • Dewatering and drying of the feedstock
  • Conditioning of free fatty acid content
  • Consistent, specified feed to the reaction section
Lean and compact

A Complete Plant in a Small Footprint

Because no biodiesel distillation is required, the whole process fits into a remarkably small area. Reaction, separation, methanol recovery and purification are arranged as one compact block that can be installed inside an existing industrial hall.

The result is lower investment for buildings and structures, shorter piping runs, less heat loss and an installation that one shift team can supervise from a single position.
